Taffs Well Away

Taffs Well RFC v Pentyrch RFC - 27 January 2018

This local derby was played in wet, muddy conditions but both sides endeavoured to make a game of it. The hosts started the better and primarily played a driving maul game but the Pentyrch defence was solid. After about 15 minutes, near the visitors posts, the home side took a quick tap penalty. Pentyrch tackled the ball carrier within 10 meters of the kick and the referee awarded Taffs Well a penalty try. The visitors came more into the game and by the interval led 7-9 following three penalty goals by Morgan Hayward, two from long distance.

Pentyrch started the better in the second half and exerted most of the pressure. At a ruck, on the home 22, the ball was passed back to be cleared but the home player spilled the ball. outside half Morgan Hayward was quick to pop the ball up to Dylan Atkins who reacted quickly, on the run, and barged over in the corner for an unconverted try. Apart from a converted penalty to the hosts the visitors kept the home side at bay until the final 10 minutes. Poor kicking and indiscipline led to the referee awarding the hosts a further penalty try after Pentyrch collapsed three successive scrums near the try line. A last minute penalty for the hosts sealed their victory. The final score was 20-14, with Pentyrch earning a loosing bonus point.

The 2nd and Youth XVs had their games postponed due to the weather.

Due to the 6 Nations the 1st XV next play on 17 February, when they host Llandaff North RFC. On the same date the 2nd XV host Fairwater RFC. Both games KO at 2:30pm. At present the Youth XV does not have a fixture.
