Pentyrch RFC hosted Penarth RFC, two teams in the bottom half of the league and both desperate for points. Pentyrch started brightly, playing their usual brand of fluent, open rugby. They deservedly took the lead after about fifteen minutes when Daniel Howorth crossed for an unconverted try. Although Penarth RFC came back into the game periodically it was the home team who retained the upper hand in the first half, albeit they could not add to their score.
With the strong wind continually blowing across the pitch Pentyrch started the second half where they left off in the first. A penalty goal by Morgan Hayward and an unconverted try by Robbie Thomas, following a good move down the left, pushed the home side to a healthy 13-0 lead. Further injuries disrupted the home side and the Penarth pack, through their driving mauls, gradually got back into the game. An unconverted try and a penalty by the visitors narrowed the home side’s lead. With ten minutes left Penarth scored their second unconverted try to bring the scores level. Both sides had other chances to sneak a win but it was Pentyrch who took the final advantage. With the last move of the game a Penarth forward was penalised for not releasing the ball in a ruck. There was no time to kick to touch which meant Morgan Hayward decided to kick for goal, into the wind, to win the game. That’s exactly what he did, with the ball just scraping over the crossbar. The final score was 16-13, with Pentyrch bagging a much needed 4 points and Penarth earning a loosing bonus point. Lewis Edwards was named Pentyrch ‘Man of the Match’.
The Youth XV’s game against Penarth was postponed as Penarth could not raise a side. The Development Team had no fixture.
Next Saturday, 28 February, the 1st XV are home again, this time against CRCC. Neither of the other teams have a fixture due to the international weekend.
