Old Illtydians A League 33-28 L

On a quite windy but dry afternoon with the pitch in a surprisingly good condition after the heavy rain in the week the Illts kicked off. Pentyrch gathered the ball and kicked the ball back. There followed a period of scrappy play containing quite a few knock-ons by both sides. At the last scrum in this period The Tyrchs ran the ball into mid field and following a good run by Huw Rees were awarded a penalty. The kick to touch was missed but Tyrchs had a lineout from the return kick from the Illts. The Tyrchs were awarded another penalty following the lineout which was kicked to touch and despite winning the lineout the ball was knocked on in midfield. All the play for the next ten minutes or so was between the two ten metre lines but following yet another knock on the Illts No 11 kicked the ball into the Pentyrch 22, regathered, drew his man and passed to their No 7 who scored a good try under the posts. The try was converted successfully making the score Illts 7 Pentyrch 0.

The Tyrchs restarted the game but were penalised for a high tackle. The Illts kicked the ball to touch but were penalised for not throwing the ball in straight. Following the resulting scrum the Tyrchs ran the ball in to the Illts 22 and were awarded a penalty which was successfully converted by Rhys Lynch. Score Ilts 7 Pentyrch 3. At the restart the Illts knocked on the Tyrchs return kick and after winning the resulting scrum the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty which was kicked to touch. The Tyrchs were now looking far more positive and following winning the lineout ran the ball really well in midfield allowing Nathan Williams to cut inside and score under the posts. The try was successfully converted by Rhys making the score Illts 7 Pentyrch 10.

The Ilts hit back immediately following the restart and after a scrum following a knock-on by the Tyrchs moved the ball very swiftly to the left and their No 11 cut inside to score a very good try under the post that was converted successfully. Score Illts 14 Pentyrch 10. The Tyrchs were having none of it and after being awarded a penalty ran the ball back into the Illts mid field and Tom Marley scored a try under the posts that was again converted by Rhys. After the restart Illts failed to secure the returned kick but the Tyrchs lost the resulting scrum. However the referee awarded the Tyrchs a penalty for obstruction and Rhys successfully converted it. Score Illts 14 Pentyrch 20.

The referee blew up at half time with both Illts wings looking very dangerous and Rhys Lynch having a good game with the boot for the Tyrchs.

The Tyrchs kicked off the second half and after fielding the ball the Illts were unlucky to knock it on. The ball was kicked to touch but the Tyrchs were penalised at the resulting lineout. The game then became a bit scrappy with both sides not wanting to make mistakes. Following a lineout the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty after the referee had a long talk with the Illts captain. The ball was kicked to touch on the Illts 22 but unfortunately the Tyrchs lost the lineout and the Illts ran the ball back very quickly up the left and scored a good try in the left hand corner. The try was successfully converted making the score Illts 21 Pentyrch 20.

After the restart the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty for a no arms tackle and because of the earlier warning the referee yellow carded the Illts substitute No18. The Tyrchs kicked the ball to touch but lost the resulting lineout and the Illts took full advantage only to be held up on the Tyrchs line following a good tackle by David Jones. The player with the ball was eventually tackled into touch and following the lineout the Tyrchs ran the ball positively up the field only to knock on in their eagerness to regain the lead. The Illts ran the ball from the resulting scrum but Nathan Williams managed to steal the ball in the tackle. The referee decided the Illts had knocked the ball on and awarded the Tyrch a scrum.The Tyrchs duly won the scrum and Tom Marley put in a good kick deep into the Illts 22. Good follow up and pressure by David Ince and Tom Marley caused Illts to lose the ball resulting possession to the Tyrchs who took full advantage with Dave Jones scoring near the posts. The try was again converted by Rhys who was having a good game making the score Illts 21 Pentyrch 27.

The Tyrchs stole the ball at the lineout and Tom Marley cleared up to the Illts 10 metre line. The Illts won the lineout and their forwards slowly moved up the field setting up a series of mauls. After releasing the ball to their backs Illts swiftly attacked down the blind-side and scored a try not far from the left hand corner flag. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score Illts 26 Pentyrch 27.

AT the restart the Tyrchs pressured the Illts defence so well that they conceded a penalty which was kicked to touch for a lineout some 7/8 metres from the Illts line. The ball was safely won and moved into midfield. The Tyrchs maintained progress only to be penalised for a doubtful offence some 5 metres from the Illts line. The Illts moved the ball quickly up-field and only robust defence by the Tyrchs held them out. Unfortunately Alun Davidson suffered a leg injury during this defence and had to be helped off the field. The referee did not allow a substitute for technical reasons so the Tyrchs were down to 14 men. Immediately after that two Illts forwards were obstructing progress on the wrong side of a maul and the referee spoke to David Ince about the manner of his protestations regarding the matter and chose to show him a yellow card. The Tyrchs were then down to 13 men and soon after conceded another penalty which was kicked to touch on the Tyrchs 22. The game was now in the last few minutes and the Illts won the lineout. The ball was run up through mid-field and despite valiant defence the lack of numbers eventually told with Illts scoring a try in the left hand corner. The conversion was successful making the score Illts 33 Pentyrch 27.  

The Tyrchs quickly restarted the game and pressured the Illts into making a mistake and giving up the ball. The Tyrchs were awarded a scrum swiftly followed by a penalty for a very dangerous tackle when they were in a scoring position. The referee decided that a simple penalty was sufficient and the ball was kicked to touch. The Tyrchs with only thirteen men remember continued to press and were awarded successive penalties quickly resulting in a lineout about 7 metres out from the Illts line. The lineout was won but sheer weight of numbers kept the Tyrchs out. In the very dying moments the Tyrchs were awarded another penalty which was again kicked to touch. The Tyrchs lost the ball in a maul following the lineout and the ball was kicked dead with the referee signalling end of play.
