Pentyrch RFC v Penarth RFC - WRU Bowl 2nd Round 6 October 2018
This was a very entertaining match, played in a good spirit. Both teams wanted to play open rugby and it was the hosts who took an early lead after 5 minutes. A few of the pack broke through the Penarth defence near half way and, following some good interchange of passes, second row Ben Jones scored under the posts. Rhys Lynch converted. Pentyrch continued to press and the next score came from centre Huw Rees who ran a beautiful angle to take a pass which allowed him to run 40 meters to score under the posts. Hywel Williams converted. Towards the end of the first half captain Tom Marley scored two quick tries, one following a Penarth error, when they lost the ball, and another an interception. One try was converted by Hywel Williams, the other by Rhys Lynch. Both sides attacked well in the first half but the main difference was the Pentyrch defence. The visitors scored an unconverted try just before half time to leave the interval score 28-5.
The visitors scored an early converted try in the second half but this was quickly cancelled out by an unconverted try from Nathan Williams for the hosts. The visitors scored a further 2 converted tries, sandwiched between was an unconverted try by David Jones for Pentyrch. The final score saw Pentyrch advance into the 3rd Round by 38-26.
The 2nd XV played in a cup game at Pontyclun and were leading 12-19 after an hour when the game was abandoned due to a serious injury to a Pentyrch player. The Youth XV didn't play.
