Pontyclun Home 13-14

Match Report Pentyrch v Pontyclun on 23rd March 2019

Pentyrch kicked off on bright sunny afternoon with the pitch in surprisingly good condition. Pontyclun took a good catch, won a penalty and found a good touch just outside the Tyrchs 22. The Tyrchs knocked the ball on at the resulting lineout but were awarded a free kick at the next scrum. It was taken quickly by Kieran Williams who put in a good run through midfield only to be called back for a penalty. Clun kicked the ball to touch but were penalised at the lineout. Hywel Williams found a good touch some 10 metres out from the Clun line. The lineout was won and following some good handling in mid field Joe Paddison rounded his opposite number to score a good try. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score Tyrchs 5 Clun 0.

Clun restarted the game and following a good catch the Tyrchs were awarded a scrum during which the Clun no 3 suffered an injury. The Tyrchs were penalised at the delayed scrum and there followed what can only be described as a “Penalty Brexit”. It seemed that every move by both sides broke down due to penalties. It seemed to go on for an enterable time. Finally following by another penalty the Tyrchs paid the penalty for not finding touch. Clun ran the ball back very strongly, were able to build more attacks resulting in them scoring in the left hand corner. The conversion was unsuccessful. Score Tyrchs 5 Clun 5.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and regained the ball. The Tyrchs forwards walked the maul up field but when released the ball was lost in mid field. Clun won the scrum and moved the ball into the Tyrchs half. Clun were then awarded a penalty and chose to kick at the posts. Nicky Theaker’s penalty unfortunately hit the post and following the rebound the Tyrchs were awarded a scrum. There followed another period of penalty and free kick exchanges with all supporters seemingly welcoming the half time whistle.

Clun kicked off the second half and knocked the ball on. The scrum was won and play moved up to half way. Clun won the lineout but conceded a scrum. The Tyrchs won it and mounted a series of attacks at the Clun line. Eventually with a 3/2 overlap a Clun defender deliberately knocked the ball on and with the Tyrchs supporters demanding a penalty try Nathan Williams regathered and scored in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score Tyrchs 10 Clun 5.

Clun restarted the game with the Tyrchs looking more confident. The Tyrchs fielded the ball well, moved the ball up field and won a lineout near half way. At the lineout the Tyrchs conceded a penalty and Nicky Theaker kicked a very good goal from near half way. Score Tyrchs 10 Clun 8.

The Tyrchs again restarted the game and Clun knocked the ball on. The Tyrchs won the resulting scrum and Kieran Williams out in another good run. The Tyrchs were then awarded a penalty and following a good kick to touch were camped in the Clun 22 for some time. Nathan Williams put in another good run, injuring himself in the process. Clun were awarded a 22 metre restart and the ball was kicked a long way up field. Unfortunately the Tyrchs knocked the ball on and following the scrum conceded another penalty. Nicky Theaker stepped up and made the score Tyrchs 10 Clun 11.  

The Tyrchs restarted the game and following pressure on the Clun defence won a penalty which Hywel Williams successfully converted making the score Tyrchs 13 Clun 11.

Clun eagerly restarted the game and the Tyrchs lost the ball in the tackle following a good catch. Clun won the scrum but knocked the ball on. In injury time by this time the Tyrchs ran the ball optimistically with Clun knocking the ball on in attempting to stem the flow. There followed four scrums, two to either side and following the last one the Tyrchs won it and found a good touch inside the Clun half. However the referee decided that one of the Tyrch forwards despite not interfering with play and with the ball cleared dead awarded a penalty to Clun for not retreating. Nicky Theaker kicked the penalty in the 12th minute of injury time making the final score heartbreakingly for the home supporters Tyrchs 13 Clun 14.

This weekend sees the  1st away to Treharris and the seconds host a GAME ON TOURNAMENT day  at the Parc. We also see the youth away to Llantwit Fardre
