Pentyrch RFC v Deri RFC – 28 October 2017
Pentyrch hosted Deri RFC in the 3rd round of the WRU Bowl competition, the first time the clubs had played each other. Although Deri play in a league below Pentyrch they arrived without having lost in their previous 27 games and the quality of their team showed why they had achieved this long run of success.
The first half was evenly contested throughout. The visitors scored 2 converted tries in the first 15 minutes, indispersed with a penalty goal by Morgan Hayward for the hosts. The home backs finally started to show their quality and a fine move ended with Barry Topping-Morris crossing near the posts, with Morgan Hayward adding the conversion. In a game that swung from one end of the pitch to the other Pentyrch took the lead when, following several mauls near the hosts line, Sam Scanlon managed to score on the line. The conversion failed. The visitors added a further unconverted try near the interval but Pentyrch replied immediately with Rhys Dickens finishing off another good move to score an unconverted try in the corner. At the interval the score was 20-19.
The first 20 minutes of the second half was dominated by Deri. They scored 3 unconverted tries without response to take what everyone thought would be an unassailable lead at 20-34. However, the hosts fought back and scored 2 quick tries through Ethan Denty and Rhys Dickens, with Morgan Hayward converting one, reducing the hosts lead to 32-34. In the final 10 minutes Pentyrch pressed hard and had several opportunites to score. These were not taken and Deri broke away at the very end to score an unconverted try to win the game 32-39. It was an excellent display of rugby by two teams who wanted to play an open game.
The 2nd XV continued their winning run this season by winning 5-14 at Llandaff RFC
Next Saturday, 4th November, Pentyrch return to league rugby when they host Old Illtydians. The 2nd XV play away at St.Albans. Both games kick off at 2:30pm. The Youth XV do not have a fixture.
