Poignant derby win against Taffs Well

Pentyrch RFC v Taffs Well RFC

On a bitterly cold afternoon the Tyrchs kicked off the match against local rivals Taffs Well who were immediately awarded a scrum for aknock on. At the scrum the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty and found a good touch. The Tyrchs won the line out but were penalised. The game then ebbed and flowed for about 20 minutes without any team getting on top. Taffs well then gained ground anddrove up to the Tyrchs line only to unluckily lose the ball. The Tyrchs were awarded a penalty at the resulting scrum which was taken quickly and the ball was moved into the Taffs Well half only to knock the ball on. Taffs Well were penalised at the scrum, GethinThomas found a good touch, the Tyrchs won it and drove up to the Taffs Well line for Ben Jones to score. Gethin put over a very good conversion.

Tyrchs 7 Taffs Well 0.

Taffs Well restarted the game but immediately conceded a penalty. The kick to touch narrowly missed but the Tyrchs pressured the Taffs Well defence and regained the ball. Lloyd John took possession and scored a good opportunist try. Gethin converted.

Tyrchs 14 Taffs Well 0.

Taffs Well restarted the game and were awarded a scrum following a knock on. The Tyrchs were awarded a penalty and found a good touch. The Tyrchs won the resulting line out and after exerting a good deal of pressure gained a penalty. The referee deemed it necessary to give Taffs Well a yellow card. The Tyrchs found a touch but lost the ball and the referee blew for half time.

Half time Tyrchs 14 Taffs Well 0.

Taffs Well kicked off the second half and both sides exchanged penalties which both were successfully converted making the score Tyrchs 17 Taffs Well 3.Taffs Well restarted the game and the Tyrchs spent the next 10 minutes or so encamped deep in the Taffs Well half. Eventually the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty which was converted by Gethin. Tyrchs 20 Taffs Well 3.

The Tyrchs were now on top and following a period of sustained pressure were awarded a penalty. Gethin found a very good touch near the Taffs Well line and following the line out Ben Williams scored near the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 25 Taffs Well 3.

Taffs Well restarted the game and following another period ofpressure by the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty. Taffs Well found a good touch won the line out and drove into the Tyrchs half gaininga penalty. Taffs Well chose to take a scrum but were unfortunately penalised. The Tyrchs cleared their lines, won the line out and ran the ball into the Taffs Well 22. Under pressure Taffs well conceded another penalty and the Tyrchs moved the ball up the right hand side and following good support by Ben Williams Tom Angel scored in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful. The referee blew for full time shortly after the restart making the final score Tyrchs 30 Taffs Well 3.
