Tyrchs earn bonus point in hard fought match

Match Report: Pentyrch v Penygraig 15th April 2023

By Harry Rees

Penygraig kicked off the match on a clear sunny afternoon and following a good catch by the Tyrchs both sides exchanged a number of kicks before the Tyrchs regained possession. The Tyrchs moved the ball really well and were soon two metres from the Graig line. The ball was recycled quickly and Michael Owen scored a try after only three minutes play. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 5 Graig 0.

Graig restarted the game with the Tyrchs again making a good catch and moving the ball up field. The Graig defence held firm and were awarded a penalty for their efforts. Unfortunately the kick missed touch and the Tyrchs then retained the ball for some minutes quietly moving up the field. Unfortunately the ball was knocked on, Graig won the scrum and found a good touch near half way. The Tyrchs won the lineout and ran the ball up to the Graig 22 and with Ben Jones making a storming run up to the Graig line a try seemed inevitable. However, perhaps because of a little impatience, the Tyrchs conceded a penalty and Graig cleared their lines. The Tyrchs won the resulting lineout and again ran the ball strongly winning a penalty in mid field. The penalty was taken quickly and Adam Conway scored a try converted by Morgan Hayward.

Tyrchs 12 Graig 0.

Graig restarted the game but with the Tyrchs in control of the game play soon ended up in the Graig 22. The Tyrchs again moved the ball well and were awarded a penalty which Morgan Hayward successfully converted.

Tyrchs 15 Graig 0.

Graig again restarted the game and following another good catch the Tyrchs moved up field but lost their focus and succeeded in losing the ball. Graig set up a promising attack gaining a penalty. Graig found a good touch, won the resulting lineout and for the first time really pressured the Tyrchs defence. The Tyrchs defended really well gaining a penalty after which they found a good touch. The Tyrchs won the following lineout and set up a good attack up the left flank only for the final pass to be intercepted. The Graig wing raced down the touchline only being stopped by a desperate last minute tackle. The referee then decided that the Tyrchs had knocked the ball on and awarded Graig a scrum which they won despite strong pressure from the Tyrchs eight. Graig were then awarded a penalty. Graig found a decent touch, won the resulting lineout and tried to make some headway. Good defence by the Tyrchs kept them outside the Tyrchs 22 and following a short period of stalemate involving a couple of scrums and lineouts, a good clearance kick by Tom James and a thrilling run by Lloyd John the referee blew for half time.

Half Time Tyrchs15 Graig 0.

The Tyrchs kicked off the second half and after some sterling work by the Graig defence were awarded a scrum. The Tyrchs comfortably won the scrum and ran the ball into mid field. Tom James held the defence and gave a good inside pass to Nathan Williams who scorched through the Graig defence to score by the posts. The try was converted by Morgan Hayward.

Tyrchs 22 Graig 0.

Graig dropped out to restart the game and following a good catch Ben Jones put in another strong run up the field only being stopped by a good tackle which dislodged the ball. The Tyrchs were penalised at the resulting scrum and Graig found a good touch. Graig won the following lineout and following a period of scrappy play scored a try to the left of the posts. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 22 Graig 5.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and despite Graig making a good catch the Tyrchs managed to get the ball back setting up a good attack. Unfortunately when anothertry was beckoning they were called back for a crossing offence. Graig found a good touch but were penalised at the resulting lineout. The Tyrchs then seemed to calm things down a bit finding more equilibrium and after a period of sustained pressure were awarded a penalty. The Tyrchs found a good touch, won the lineout and ran the ball down the right flank with Fin Baber scoring a good bonus point try. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 27 Graig 5

Graig restarted the game and for the first time in the game the Tyrchs failed to secure the ball with the referee awarding Graig a scrum. Graig won the scrum and were immediately awarded a penalty. Graig looking more determined as the half went on unfortunately lost the resulting lineout and the Tyrchs cleared the ball intotouch in the Graig half. Another period of stalemate followed during which a number of scrums, lineouts and penalties took place which eventually led to a lineout 6/7 metres out from the Tyrchs line. The Tyrchs knocked the ball on at the lineout and Graig won the resulting scrum, which seemed to take an inordinate amount of time to

settle. Graig ran the ball up to the Tyrchs line but the defence recovered well forcing a knock on. The Tyrchs won the scrum 5 metres out from their own posts and Tom James put in a good relieving kick. Graig won the following line out but were penalised by the referee. The Tyrchs found a good touch but lost the resulting lineout with Graig clearing the ball up field. Nathan Williams caught the ball on the run and ran 50 metres through the Graig defence. Nathan made the ball available after being tackled and the Tyrchs swiftly moved it to the right drawing the defence and after a great inside ball Kieran Williams scored a good try. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 32 Graig 5.

Graig restarted the game and Ben Jones took another good catch and the Tyrchs moved the ball only to be called back for a forward pass. Graig won the resulting scrum, were awarded a penalty and found a good touch. Graig won the following lineout but were penalised for a technical offence. Morgan Hayward with the referee indicating that time was nearly up tapped the ball and kicked it dead. The referee who had a good game blew up for full time.
