Match Report Pentyrch v Clwb Rygbi Caerdydd on 22nd April 2023

Clwb kicked off what was the third match in a week for the Tyrchs with the ball bouncing awkwardly into touch. The Tyrchs won the line out and following strong runs by Ben Jones and Adam Conway, Phil Pariyo was stopped just short of the Clwb line. The referee awarded the Tyrchs a penalty with Morgan Hayward finding a good touch some 5 metres out from the Clwb line. The Tyrchs won the resulting lineout and after some strong pressure on the Clwb defence Michael Owen scored a try which was converted by Gethin Thomas.

Tyrchs 7 Clwb 0.

Clwb restarted the game and Ben Jones made another good catch. The Tyrchs maintained good possession and were awarded a penalty for their efforts. Morgan found a good touch, the Tyrchs won the lineout which followed, ran the ball strongly only to be held up over the Clwb line. Chris Moss fielded the inevitable drop out by Clwb (what a negative rule that is!!) and back came the Tyrchs moving the ball to the left with Lloyd John scoring in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 12 Clwb 0.

Clwb restarted the game and following a good exit by the Tyrchs Clwb were awarded a penalty and after regaining the initiative scored a try which was converted.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and regained the ball after it was cleared up field. The Tyrchs then set up a period of pressure on the Clwb defence culminating in the ball being knocked on over the Clwb line when a try seemed inevitable. Clwb won the resulting scrum but the Tyrchs charged down the clearance kick which followed. The Tyrchs then continued to press with Phil Pariyo making a strong run down the right flank. Desperate defence by Clwb caused them to concede a penalty for offside. The Tyrchs chose to take a scrum, which they won and Kieran Williams made a sniping run scoring a good individual try which was converted by Gethin.

Tyrchs 19 Clwb 7.

Clwb restarted the game and after making a safe catch the Tyrchs immediately set up a series of attacks progressing some 60 metres up the field. The ball was recycled successfully and with the defence being drawn in Gruff Roberts scored a try out on the flank. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 24 Clwb 7.

Clwb again restarted the game and the Tyrchs cleared the ball into the Clwb half. Clwb lost the resulting lineout and the Tyrchs set off again successfully going through 8 phases before unfortunately knocking the ball on. Clwb won the scrum which followed but their clearance kick was once again charged down. The Tyrchs again set up a series of good attacks going through some 9/10 phases before Tom Marley drew his opposite number in and gave Nick Jones a scoring pass. The try was converted by Gethin.

Tyrchs 31 Clwb 7.

Clwb restarted the game and the Tyrchs came charging back but knocked the ball on. Despite strong pressure from the Tyrchs Clwb won the scrum and cleared the ball up to half way. The Tyrchs won the resulting lineout and after very good handling Adam Conway scored a try which was successfully converted.

The Tyrchs kicked off the second half and Clwb cleared the ball into the Tyrchs half and with the ball not making touch Gethin put in a good kick finding touch deep in the Clwb half. Clwb won the lineout and play continued in their half with a few lineouts and scrums being strongly contested by both sides. Clwb found themselves under more pressure and only a knock on stopped the Tyrchs scoring again. Clwb won the resulting scrum and successfully found touch near half way. The Tyrchs won the lineout and following some good play by Nick Jones Gethin Thomas scored a try. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 43 Clwb 7.

Clwb restarted the game and due to good following up the Tyrchs were bundled into touch. Under pressure from the Tyrchs Clwb lost the lineout but were awarded a penalty. The referee then yellow carded a Tyrchs player for indiscipline. Clwb found a good touch making a rare appearance in the Tyrchs 22. Unfortunately they lost the lineout losing impetus and soon play was back near the Clwb 22. Clwb regained the ball and play swung back into the Tyrchs half. Clwb pressured the Tyrchs defence which was only relieved by a very good relieving kick by Gethin. Clwb won the lineout and looking more positive for some minutes set up a series of good attacks winning 2/3 scrums in succession. Clwb won the next scrum but under strong pressure from the Tyrchs knocked the ball on. The Tyrchs won the scrum and moved the ball into mid field only to be called back for a forward pass. Clwb won the resulting scrum and ran the ball up the field and taking the Tyrchs defence by surprise scored a good try in the right hand corner. The Try was successfully converted from far out on the touchline.

Tyrchs 43 Clwb 14.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and following a good catch and clearance kick Clwb found themselves back in the Tyrchs half. Looking rejuvenated Clwb pressured the Tyrchs defence and only a very good 50/20 clearance kick by Gethin relieved the pressure. The Tyrchs unfortunately lost the resulting lineout and Clwb again set up a series of attacks which eventually led to them being awarded a penalty try for a high tackle on the Tyrchs try line.

Tyrchs 43 Clwb 21.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and after a few scrums Clwb were again awarded a penalty. Clwb took it quickly and fair play only good defence by the Tyrchs caused them to knock the ball in the tackle. The referee who had been checking his watch for a few minutes then blew for full time.
