Pentyrch V Old Illtydians
This was the first round of the WRU Bowl Competition but a game most Pentyrch spectators will be glad to forget. In the first half particularly the opposition were more intent in concentrating on acts of thuggery instead of playing rugby as it should be played. By half time Pentyrch had lost four players to injury and towards the end of the half the referee belatedly branded three red cards, two to the home side and one to the visitors. Had the referee been stricter earlier in the half, and shown red cards to the visitors for blatant and dangerous tip and high tackles, the game may not have deteriorated to the level it did. At half time the hosts led 10-5 with all points (a penalty goal and converted try) being scored by Rhys Lynch, on his debut for the first team.
More rugby was played in the second half with Pentyrch stretching their lead through a try by flanker Huw Rees, converted by Rhys Lynch. The visitors scored a breakaway converted try before Rhys Lynch closed the scoring with another penalty goal. The action leading up to the penalty goal should have resulted in a red card to the opposition for a blatant high tackle and a penalty try awarded to the home team. The final score was 20-12.
The 2nd XV had no game whilst the Youth XV lost at Cardiff Quins 41-5
Next Saturday, 22 September, the 1st XV is away at Fairwater RFC whilst the 2nd XV and Youth play at home against Llandaff RFC and Fairwater RFC respectively.
