Match Report Pentyrch v Gwernyfed on 26th January 2019
On a wet and bitterly cold afternoon Gwernyfed kicked off, Hywel Chatham fielded the ball confidently and kicked the ball well up field putting pressure on the Gwern defence. The Tyrchs were awarded a penalty and chose to kick at the posts. The attempt narrowly missed. Gwern restarted the game at the 22 and the Tyrchs caught the kick off and moved the ball upfield forcing Gwern to concede a scrum. The Tyrchs organised their attack and moved the ball positively through the hands with Nathan Williams scoring a very good try under the posts. The try was converted by Hywel Chatham making the score Tyrchs 7 Gwern 0.
Gwern restarted the game and after some toing and froing the Tyrchs were awarded a scrum which they won easily. The ball was kicked through towards the Gwern line only for Gwern to knock it on. The Tyrchs were looking threatening but lost control of the ball after winning the scrum. Not to be denied they applied a great deal of pressure on the Gwern scrum. Gwern eventually succeeded in winning the ball and moved it positively up the field making good ground. Good defence by the Tyrchs caused the ball to be lost forward in the tackle. The Tyrchs won the resulting scrum and kicked the ball up the field with Gwern anxiously covering. The Tyrchs were then awarded a penalty and Hywel Chatham found a good touch near the Gwern 22. The Tyrchs won the resulting lineout and but knocked the ball on in mid field. Gwern won the scrum and but conceded a penalty for obstruction. Chatham found a good touch but the Tyrchs were penalised for not throwing the ball in straight. At the resulting scrum the Tyrchs were awarded a free kick which was taken quickly by Rhys Thomas, who transferred the ball to Joe Paddison who scored in the left hand corner. The try was disputed but after extremely good sportsmanship by the Gwern touch judge it was awarded. The conversion fell short. Score Tyrchs 12 Gwern 0.
At the restart the Tyrchs sought to build up momentum again and following a scrum and lineout were awarded a penalty. Hywel Chatham successfully guided the ball between the posts. Score Tyrchs 15 Gwern 0.
Gwern restarted the game but failed to kick the ball the required 10 metres. The Tyrchs were awarded a scrum on half way, won it but knocked the ball on. Gwern won the scrum and it was only determined defence by the Tyrchs that held them out. The Tyrchs were awarded a scrum and after a strong run by Tom Marley the ball went out of play on half way.

The Tyrchs kicked off the second half in deteriorating weather conditions with both sides finding it difficult to maintain momentum for quite long periods. The Tyrchs were finally awarded a lineout which was won comfortably and following quick transfers David Jones ran deep into the Gwern half. Ethan Dente carried on the move only to be forced into touch. There followed a period in which both sides were awarded a number of scrums and lineouts. The Tyrchs coaching team were calling out for patience with the prospect of winning a bonus point slipping away. The Tyrchs won the ball back and put a good kick into the Gwern 22 resulting in a lineout to Gwern. The worsening conditions made throwing in at lineout a difficult task so unsurprisingly Gwern were penalised for not throwing the ball in straight. The Tyrchs were awarded a penalty after the scrum and chose to kick for touch to chase the bonus point. The Tyrchs contrived to lose the lineout and following some direct running from the half backs Gwern were awarded a penalty. Gwern took it quickly but were held back by some strong tackling. Gwern were looking threatening but conceded a penalty for what again looked like obstruction. The Tyrchs cleared the ball up nearly to the half way line but conceded a penalty. Gwern won the lineout and drove the ball into the Tyrchs half. Good defence by the Tyrchs again forced a knock on and after the scrum was reset twice they moved the ball through the hands. The ball was then chipped through with Nathan Williams making a determined dash up the field to regather. Unfortunately the Tyrchs were penalised for holding on thus alleviating the pressure. The Tyrchs were soon back on the offensive as Gwern lost control of the ball at the resulting lineout and following some good work by Nathan Williams Rhys Thomas scored in the right hand corner. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score Tyrchs 20 Gwern 0.
Gwern restarted the game with the conditions getting even worse. Spectators were looking enviously at the inviting club house when Gwern won a lineout in the Tyrchs 22 and only good defence kept them out. Gwern lost control of the ball after a kick through and Joe Paddison fielded it well, kicked on into the Gwern half. He managed to regain it but was forced into touch. Gwern took the lineout but were penalised for not throwing in straight. The Tyrchs chose to take a scrum and following a very good kick over the defence by Chatham Nathan Williams regathered the ball and scored under the posts. The conversion was successful making the final score Tyrchs 27 Gwern 0 earning the Tyrchs a hard earned bonus point.

2nd XV played a home league match against Cathays RFC and a winning score of 29-7 saw them home dispite the visitors being in charge at H/T with a 5-7 score, the second half saw a further 3 tries and a pen to make the final score 29-7
The youth played a Blue Cup match at Cardiff Quins and the score line 22-5 saw the home side go through to the main competition with the young Tyrch's going into the plate draw, next weekend sees the youth at home against Pontyclun 2-30pm KO
