Match Report Pentyrch v Gwernyfed on 20th October
After leaving the mist shrouded hills of Pentyrch it was a pleasure to arrive at Talgarth in bright sunny conditions. Gwern kicked off and after two scrums for knock ons (one to each side) the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty which they took quickly transferring the ball along the line to Ethan Denty who made good ground before being tackled into touch on the Gwern 22. The Tyrchs won the lineout and again made good inroads into the Gwern 22 which resulted in them being awarded a penalty which was converted by Rhys Lynch.

At the restart Gwern pressured the Tyrchs defence into conceding a penalty which was converted by Gerwyn Williams making the score Gwern 3 Tyrchs 3.
The Tyrchs kicked off deep into the Gwern 22 but following a good catch and drive the ball was kicked straight into touch by the Tyrchs following a tentative kick by Gwern. At the resulting lineout the Tyrchs were awarded a free kick which was taken quickly and following a period of sustained pressure Tom Marley made strong progress down the middle creating a try for Chris Moss. The try was converted by Rhys Lynch who was looking very comfortable at no 10.Score Gwern 3 Tyrchs 10.
Gwern restarted the game but unfortunately kicked the ball straight into touch. The Tyrchs won the resulting scrum and after pressurising the Gwern defence were called back for a knock on. The Tyrchs were penalised at the resulting scrum with Gwern electing to take a shot at the posts which went marginally wide.
The Tyrchs restarted the game with a kick from their 22 and after two scrums near the half way line were awarded a lineout just outside the Gwern 22. The Tyrchs won the lineout and Tom Marley ran the ball into mid filed drawing the defence and gave a good inside ball to Nathan Williams who scored under the posts. Rhys Lynch converted making the score Gwern 3 Tyrchs 17.
Following the restart the Tyrchs won a lineout on the Gwern 22 and following another period of sustained pressure were awarded a penalty which was converted by Rhys Lynch. Score. Gwern 3 Tyrchs 20.
Gwern kicked off again and the Tyrchs successfully fielded the ball and moved positively up the field. The Tyrchs were now in complete control of the game and despite very good defence by Gwern were camped in their 22 for some time. The pressure told with the Tyrchs being awarded a penalty. Rhys Lynch put in a good touch finder with a lineout on the Gwern 22. The Tyrchs won the lineout but were forced back into touch. Gwern were deemed to not throw the ball in straight and from the resulting scrum the ball was moved into mid field, the defence again drawn and Nathan Williams ran through the resulting gap and scored another try under the posts. Rhys Lynch converted making the score Gwern 3 Tyrchs 27.

The Tyrchs kicked off the second half and after a short period of give and take Gwern won a series of rucks and mauls and exerted a great deal of pressure on the Tyrchs line. Stout defence by the Tyrchs enabled them to win the ball back quickly turning defence into attack. Ethen Denty made good progress up the left flank and was very unlucky not to score. In fact the referee decided that he had been held up over the line and after the resulting scrum the ball was moved to Rhys Lynch who made an outstanding outside break and scored under the posts. He converted his own try making the score Gwern 3 Tyrchs 34.
The Tyrchs successfully fielded the ball at the restart and ran the ball back with Nick Gill running strongly. Unfortunately the ball was knocked on in the tackle and Gwern were awarded a scrum which they won easily. Determined defence by the Tyrchs however allowed them to win the ball back and good communication between Rhys Lynch and George Harris allowed the latter to field a kick over the defence to score in the corner. Rhys again converted from wide out making the score Gwern 3 Tyrchs 41.
Gwern restarted the game and following pressure from their backs were awarded a penalty in the Tyrchs 22. A good touch finder was made and Gwern won the lineout. Moving the ball quickly they moved the ball to the flan only to have a pass intercepted by Nathan Williams. The referee decided that he was offside when taking the pass and following a quick tap penalty James Brute scored a try converted by Gerwyn Williams score. Gwern 10 Tyrchs 41.
The Tyrchs restarted the game with a good long kick into the Gwern 22 which Gwern ran back to half way. The Tyrchs were awarded a lineout which they duly won and Nick Gill ran very strongly only to be tackled just short of the line. Good defence by Gwern just kept the Tyrchs out but eventually the ball was moved wide to the other flank with Ethan Denty again very unlucky not to score. The result was a scrum to the Tyrchs which Gwern won and moved the ball quickly to their outside backs and Zack Skyrme scored out wide. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score Gwern 15 Tyrchs 41.
The Tyrchs restarted the game which was now in its dying moments. Gwern successfully fielded the ball and kicked it up field. David Jones fielded the ball and ran straight through a group of players only to be felled by a high tackle. The referee yellow carded the Gwern no 5 and Rhys Lynch kicked the penalty making the final score Gwern 15 Tyrchs 44
This coming weekend sees all 3 home matches being cup rounds with the Youth v Rhiwbina 1pm KO, 1st v Gwernyfed 2.30 KO and lastly 2nds v Llanishen at 3pm KO so get to the Parc for a feast of rugby this Saturday.
