Match Report Pentyrch v Tylorstown on 16th February

On a cold clear afternoon it was good to see our friends from Tylorstown after a gap of a few years. The Tyrchs kicked off only to be immediately penalised for over eagerness in the tackle. The penalty was kicked into touch at the half way and The Tigers won the resulting lineout and ran the ball into midfield. Rhys Thomas stole the ball back and kicked the ball deep into the Tigers 22. The Tigers cleared the ball into touch under pressure from George Harris. The Tyrchs won the lineout only to be penalised for not throwing the ball in straight. At the resulting scrum the Tyrchs really pressured the Tigers causing them to pass the ball forward. The Tyrchs won the scrum and drove over the Tigers line only for the referee to deem that the ball had been held up. At the next scrum the Tyrchs were penalised and the Tigers took the penalty quickly but unfortunately passed the ball behind their winger into touch. The Tyrchs won the lineout but managed to knock the ball on. The Tigers won the scrum and ran the ball into midfield, winning a penalty. The Tigers took it quickly and the Tyrchs were penalised for tackling the scrum half within the 10 metre zone. Rhys Thomas was as a consequence shown a yellow card. The Tigers kicked to touch but lost the line out to Nick Jones but the Tyrchs clearance kick was charged down and after severe pressure the Tigers regained possession with Jordan Williams scoring in the right hand corner. He converted his own try making the score Tyrchs 0 Tigers 7.

The Tyrchs restarted the game but were called back as the ball had not gone 10 metres. At the scrum the Tyrchs again exerted good pressure on the Tigers winning a penalty. Nathan Williams found a good touch; the Tyrchs won the lineout and after some good mauling the Tyrchs found themselves in the Tigers 22. The Tyrchs moved the ball to the right and in the process managed to knock over the referee. To his credit he recovered without stopping the game with the Tyrchs moving to within 10 metres of the Tigers line. Under pressure from good tackling the Tyrchs knocked the ball on. The Tigers won the resulting scrum and ran the ball really well into the Tyrchs half. The ball was kicked over the advancing defence and after being safely collected the clearance kick was again charged down causing immediate confusion in the Tyrchs defence. Liam Davies took full advantage scoring a try under the posts. The try was converted by Jordan Williams making the score Tyrchs 0 Tigers 14. The Tyrchs were paying the penalty for not clearing their lines and showing clear frustration were penalised at the kick off. The Tigers missed the kick to touch and the Tyrchs ran the ball back strongly. The Tigers were penalised for offside and the Tyrchs established a period of pressure in which they looked likely to score. After a series of scrums to both sides the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty in the Tigers 22 and chose to take a scrum. The Tyrch forwards won the ball and quickly moved forward eventually getting over the Tigers line with Owen Jones scoring a try. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score Tyrchs 5 Tigers 14.

The Tigers restarted the game and whilst the ball was caught safely the clearance kick was charged down causing the Tyrchs to knock the ball on. The Tigers won the scrum and only excellent tackling kept them out. The ball was chipped over the defence and Nathan Williams put in a good clearance kick up to half way. At the next lineout Nick Jones again stole the ball and after some good pressure the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty. The Ball was kicked to touch and after the lineout the referee blew for half time.

Half Time Score Tyrchs 5 Tigers 14.

The Tigers kicked off the second half with most of their forwards in front of the ball. The referee waved play on but the Tyrchs lost the ball in contact. The Tigers ran the ball back only to be penalised. The Tyrchs found a good touch but lost the ball forward at the lineout. The Tigers kicked behind the Tyrchs defence losing advantage and the Tyrchs ran the ball back. There followed a period of scrappy play with too much aimless kicking. Eventually the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty and found a good touch on half way. The Tyrchs won the line out but lost the ball forward. The Tigers again took full advantage and after some strong running scored a try near the posts. It was successfully converted by Jordan Williams making the score Tyrchs 5 Tigers 21.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and after successfully fielding the ball were awarded a scrum. The Tyrchs won the scrum and positively moved the ball up field showing they had not given up on the game. Unfortunately fate took a hand in that in breaking out of the 22 and making the ball available it was intercepted with the Tigers scoring another try under the posts. Jordan Williams successfully converted making the score Tyrchs 5 Tigers 28.

The Tyrchs again restarted the game with their cause looking lost but within minutes after taking a quick penalty in the Tigers 22 Gwilym Roberts scored a try which was not converted. Score Tyrchs 10 Tigers 28.

It was the Tigers turn to restart and after running the ball back the Tyrchs conceded a scrum. The Tyrchs seemed re-energised and after exerting great pressure on the Tigers scrum regained possession. Joe Paddison put in a good run but was called back for a very marginal forward pass. The Tigers won the scrum and it was their turn to be called back for a forward pass. The Tyrchs won the scrum and for five or six minutes pressured the Tigers eventually being awarded a penalty. The ball was kicked into touch and following the line out and two mauls Owen Jones scored a try for the Tyrchs. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score Tyrchs 15 Tigers 28.

The Tigers again restarted the game but kicked the ball straight out. The Tyrchs won the scrum and kicked deep into the Tigers half. The ball bounced into touch out of the reach of Tyrchs hands. Nick Jones excelling himself again stole another lineout and the Tyrchs were on the attack again. Fair play despite giving away two tries the team were not giving up. The Tigers were awarded a scrum near their 22 which they won. Nathan Williams (reminiscent of last year in Pontyclun) anticipating a pass from one of the Tiger centres intercepted and raced away to score under the posts. Rhys Thomas converted making the score Tyrchs 22 Tigers 28. 

The Tigers restarted the game, which was now in its final moments and the Tyrchs ran the ball back looking really positive. Unfortunately the ball was lost forward in the tackle. The Tigers won the scrum and ran the ball up to the Tyrchs line. The ball was moved over the line but to the relief of Tyrch supporters it was deemed to have been held up. The Tyrchs strongly defended the resulting scrum and the referee, who seemed to have been playing overtime, blew the final whistle.

 

Final Score Tyrchs 22 Tigers 28.
