Pentyrch travelled to Pontcanna fields to play their first ever league game against CRCC. They made a lively start and scored the first try of the game within ten minutes of the kick off, with captain Rhys Thomas crossing for an unconverted try. The hosts hit back virtually immediately with an unconverted try of their own and proceeded to take control of the game for the remainder of the first half. A further converted try and three penalty goals gave the home side a 21-5 lead at the interval.
The beginning of the second half certainly didn’t favour the visitors. Within ten minutes of the re-start No.10 Morgan Hayward had to leave the field following a knock on the head and soon afterwards they lost Hywel Williams with an ankle injury. The home team scored two further converted tries to stretch their lead and with still a quarter of the game remaining it was beginning to look a bleak afternoon for Pentyrch. With nothing to loose the visitors began to play their natural brand of running rugby and scored a hat-rick of tries before the final whistle. Lewis Edwards, Nick Jones and Nathan Williams all crossing the line, but unfortunately none of the tries were converted. At full time the score was 35-20. Four tries being scored by each team and both sides earning a bonus point.
The Development Team played Canton RFC at home, winning 12-7, whilst the Youth XV had no fixture.
Next Saturday, 25 October, the 1st XV play away at Maesteg Celtic in the second round of the Swalec Plate (Cup). The Youth XV are home to RTB Ebbw Vale in the second round of the WRU Youth Cup. The Development Team has no fixture arranged at present.
