Pentyrch travelled to play the Seasiders at Penarth RFC and came away with that elusive first league win of the season. Pentyrch played the best rugby throughout the game, with the home side relying mostly on their forwards. The Penarth scrum started strongly but slowly the visitors came to terms with that threat and certainly into the second half restored a degree of parity. Again Pentyrch lost possession on several occasions when in good attacking positions and squandered at least three try scoring opportunities when having clear overlap advantages.
Pentyrch moved into a 0-6 lead through two penalty goals by Morgan Hayward. Penarth reduced the deficit with a penalty goal and with the last play of the first half scored a pushover try in the corner, giving the hosts an 8-6 interval lead. Pentyrch gathered the ball from the restart and through swift ball in hand exchanges Nick Gill crossed in the first minute of the second half. Morgan Hayward slotted the conversion to restore the lead for the visitors. Penarth scored two good tries themselves. One was converted and the lead changed hands again. In the final twenty minutes Pentyrch’s fitness proved an advantage, with the home side being pinned in their own half. Constant pressure from the visitors resulted in Nick Jones going over for a try, which was converted by Hayward. With the scores level Pentyrch continued to press and an easy try scoring opportunity was lost when the ball was knocked on. Soon afterwards Morgan Hayward converted a penalty and Pentyrch comfortably held on to the lead to win the match 20-23. Morgan Hayward was chosen as Pentyrch’s ‘Man of the Match’
The Youth XV earned another fine win in beating their counterparts from Rhiwbina RFC 36-7. They now top the Youth league.
Next Saturday the 1st XV is away at CR Cymraeg Caerdydd. The Youth XV do not have a game and the Development Team is entering the Pool, in the hope of getting a home fixture.
