Match Report Pentyrch v Cefn Coed on 29^th September

On a clear sunny afternoon with the grounds looking splendid Cefn kicked off, the ball was fielded safely but Cefn knocked on the clearance kick from Pentyrch. Pentyrch won the resulting scrum and kicked the ball through to the Cefn 22 and this was safely gathered by Cefn who set up a good series of rolling mauls. Cefn were looking very positive and once the ball was released moved the ball really well only to be called back for crossing. Pentyrch successfully kicked for touch with the lineout just outside the Cefn 5 metre line. Unfortunately Pentyrch were penalised for not throwing the ball in straight-an opportunity lost. At the resulting scrum despite some excellent work by the Pentyrch pack Cefn were awarded a penalty which started free movement up the field which eventually led to Cefn being camped on the Pentyrch line for some minutes. After being awarded a penalty for a high tackle and two following scrums Cefn were looking ominously dangerous and not surprisingly scored a well worked try in the right hand corner. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score Pentyrch 0-Cefn 5.

Pentyrch restarted the game and Cefn ran the ball back really well. Capitalising on some on hesitation in Pentyrch’s defence they scored again in the same corner. The conversion was this time successful making the score Pentyrch 0-Cefn 12. 

Things were looking ominous for Pentyrch and their supporters with 20 minutes played and Cefn 12 points up.

At the restart Cefn were awarded a free kick and chose to take a scrum on the half way line. The Pentyrch pack scrummaged really well forcing Cefn back two metres and winning a penalty. To roars of encouragement from their supporters Pentyrch won the following lineout and ran the ball into the Cefn half and won another penalty. The penalty was kicked to touch on the Cefn 5 metre line but Pentyrch were penalised for a crooked throw at the resulting line out. Pentyrch frustration was there for all to see and they channelled this by strongly attacking the Cefn scrum resulting in a penalty being conceded with a yellow card being shown to a Cefn front row player. Cefn were down to 14 men and under pressure and following another two scrums and a penalty Ben Jones crashed over the line for a well-deserved try. The conversion was successful making the score Pentyrch 7-Cefn 12.

It was Pentyrch who were now looking positive and following some good work at the kick off Joe Paddison beat his man and ran the ball up to the Cefn 10 yard line. Pentyrch put pressure on the Cefn lineout and stealing it from Cefn were awarded a penalty. After winning the resulting lineout Pentyrch were unlucky to knock the ball on. Pentyrch tails were up now and following another strong attack on the Cefn scrummage won the ball back and moved the ball to the left and Joe Paddison ran strongly through the Cefn cover to score a good try. The conversion was successful making the score Pentyrch 14-Cefn 12.

On the restart Pentyrch successfully gathered the ball and looked to move the ball into the Cefn half. Strong running by the centres caused Cefn to be penalised for a high tackle and from the resulting lineout Cefn were unlucky to knock the ball on in a tackle. The Pentyrch pack was now looking very strong indeed and easily moved the Cefn pack back about two metres. The ball was released and Nathan Williams cut inside the cover defence to score a well thought out try under the posts. The conversion was successful making the score Pentyrch 21-Cefn 12.

At the kick off Pentyrch were awarded a penalty and following a good long kick to touch won the resulting lineout. Cefn were now looking a little bit shell shocked and conceded another try scored by Joe Paddison under the posts. The conversion was successful making the score Pentyrch 28-Cefn 12.

Pentyrch kicked off the second half and Cefn kicked the ball back finding touch on half way. Pentyrch won the resulting line out and moved the ball well out wide and looked certain to score again. However they were pulled back for a forward pass just a few metres from the Cefn line. Cefn won the resulting scrum and after moving the ball up field unfortunately knocked the ball on. Pentyrch won the scrum which followed but were penalised for twisting the scrum. Cefn were penalised at the resulting lineout for not throwing the ball in straight. The game then became a bit of a stalemate with both sides being awarded lineouts and scrums without making any real progress. Cefn were awarded another penalty following yet another scrum and chose to run the ball quickly and got to within a few metres of the Pentyrch try line. Sterling defence by the Pentyrch pack held them out. Despite conceding another scrum for a knock on the Pentyrch defence held and eventually the ball squirted out into Joe Paddisons’s hands and evading two tackles kicked the ball up to half way. His progress was impeded illegally and following a very good kick from the penalty Pentyrch won the lineout and following a series of mauls moved the ball in field. Following some strong running by Tom Marley the ball reached Joe Paddison who scored wide out. The conversion was very narrowly missed making the score Pentyrch 33-Cefn12.

Cefn restarted the game and strongly followed up a very good kick which resulted in a lineout to them on 10 metres out from the Pentyrch line. Pentyrch successfully challenged the following lineout and managed to win the ball which was kicked to touch on the 22 metre line. Cefn fair play were not giving up and following some good mauling broke through mid-field to score under the posts. The conversion was successfully making the score Pentyrch 33-Cefn 19.

At the restart Cefn ran the ball back positively but unfortunately knocked the ball on near the half way line. Pentyrch were now in full control of the game with options on both sides of the scrum. Strong support running following a dominant scrum saw Tom Marley crash over for a try which was successfully converted making the score Pentyrch 40-Cefn 19.

Cefn were now looking a little bit dispirited and failed to put much pressure on the player receiving the kick off with the result that Pentyrch ran the ball back very strongly into the Cefn 22. The ball was recycled quickly and Nathan Williams outflanked the opposition to score near the posts. The conversion was successful making the score Pentyrch 47-Cefn 19.

Cefn restarted the game again and following two lineouts and penalties the ball was reclaimed by Pentyrch and Nathan Williams put in another good run. In turn Cefn reclaimed the ball but knocked it on. Pentyrch were penalised at the scrum which followed which Cefn took quickly. Pentyrch were penalised again resulting in a good touch finder up into the Pentyrch 22. By this time Pentyrch supporters were calling for the final whistle but one last effort by Cefn took them up to 7/8 metres of the Pentyrch line. Unfortunately for them they conceded another scrum to Pentyrch and having won the ball it was kicked dead for full time.

d determinedly ran the ball back, winning two rucks only to knock the ball on. Pentyrch won the scrum and swiftly moved the ball along the back line with Rhys Dickens running really well up the left. Only a desperate tackle stopped him scoring a very good try in the corner. Immediately after the lineout which followed Rhys suffered a heavy blow to his neck area following a very bad no arms tackle which was unpunished by the referee. Strangely Cefn were awarded the penalty which was taken quickly and Cefn made serious headway up the field. It was Pentyrch’s turn to defend desperately and conceded a scrum following some good attacking. Cefn won the resulting scrum and showing great spirit ran the ball into the Pentyrch half. Pentyrch defended well and won the ball back and the forwards moved the ball up the centre of the field. Mark Oakman cut through the Cefn defence and passed to the supporting Ethan Williams for him to score. The conversion was successful making the score 45-7 to Pentyrch.

Pentyrch were not finished yet and following a scrum when they knocked the ball on were awarded a penalty for obstruction. Alex Moore found a good touch and following the resulting lineout Pentyrch ran the ball into the Cefn 22 for Alex Moore to receive the final pass to score under the posts. He converted his own try to make the final score 52-7 to Pentyrch.
