Abercwmboi Home

  Pentyrch RFC v Abercwmboi RFC – 30 September 2017

This week’s visitors, Abercwmboi RFC, were close to being promoted in the past two seasons. Being one of the favourites again this season a tough game was expected, and that is how it turned out. Pentyrch had the better of the early exchanges and took the lead after fifteen minutes when right wing Nathan Williams crossed in the corner. The conversion kick failed. This spurred the visitors into raising their game and they began to control the game more, with their No.10 regularly driving the home side back with his excellent kicking out of hand. The silly mistakes made by Pentyrch didn’t help their cause. Abercwmboi took the lead through two penalty goals and an unconverted try near the end of the first half gave them a 5-11 interval lead.

Both sides played entertaining rugby in the first half with the backs getting plenty of ball. Both defences were also good. Pentyrch’s momentum continued to be interrupted by the errors they made and mid way through the second half the visitors extended their lead by scoring a converted try. Pentyrch raised their game and following a period of concerted pressure, near the visitor’s line, Ollie Joyce crashed over for an unconverted try. The visitors retaliated with an unconverted try and a penalty before Pentyrch finished the scoring with Sam Scanlon crossing and Will Hayward converting. The final score was 17-26, with each side scoring three tries.

Neither the 2nd XV or Youth XV played.

Next Saturday, 7 October, the 1st XV welcome Cowbridge RFC in the WRU Bowl and the 2nd XV host Whitchurch RFC. Both games kick off at 2:30pm.
