Tyrchs claim derby double

Match Report: Taffs Well RFC v Pentyrch RFC 23rd March 2024

The rain having held off the Tyrchs kicked off on what was becoming a bright sunny afternoon and quickly established territorial supremacy. Taffs Well put up a spirited defence for some minutes but following some good work by the forwards the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty which was converted by Gethin Thomas.

Taffs Well 0 Tyrchs 3

Taffs Well restarted the game but were called back by the referee as the kick had not gone ten metres. The Tyrchs won the resulting scrum and set up a series of attacks only to knock the ball on in the Taffs Well 22. Taffs Well won the resulting scrum but following some good pressure lost the ball forward. The Tyrchs capitalised on this and moved the ball down the left hand side. Joe Webb straightened the line, drew the defence and Robbie Thomas scored a good try near the corner. The conversion narrowly missed.

Taffs Well 0 Tyrchs 8

Taffs Well restarted the game and following an exchange of kicks the Tyrchs were awarded a lineout near the Taffs Well 22. The Tyrchs won the lineout and moved the ball into the Taffs Well 22. The Tyrchs maintained pressure on the Taffs Well defence gaining a penalty. The attempt at the posts again narrowly missed.

Taffs Well took a drop out from their 22 but unfortunately the ball went straight out. The Tyrchs won the resulting scrum and moved towards the Taffs Well line. The Tyrchs kept their discipline and continued to move forward until Nick Jones scored. The Conversion was converted by Gethin.

Taffs Well 0 Tyrchs 15.

Taffs Well restarted the game and following a good catch the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty. Gethin found a good touch but with a strong wind having sprung up the referee deemed that the ball had not been thrown in straight awarding Taffs Well a scrum. Taffs Well won the scrum but the Tyrchs were penalised for wheeling the scrum. Taffs Well found a good touch, won the resulting lineout but under pressure lost the ball. The Tyrchs hoisted the ball towards the touchline near the right hand corner and following quite an exchange of kicks Taffs Well awarded a lineout. Taffs Well again due to the strong wind were deemed to have not thrown the ball in straight. The Tyrchs won the scrum and kicked ahead but were called back having been awarded a penalty for offside. The Tyrchs took it quickly and looked to score another try only to be penalised for crossing. Taffs Well found a good touch but lost the lineout. The Tyrchs quickly moved the ball gaining another penalty. In view if the wind the Tyrchs chose to take a scrum, won it and again moved strongly forward with Ethan Williams touching down near the right hand corner. However he was deemed to have put a foot in touch so the try was disallowed. Taffs Well won the lineout on their 5 metre line, lost it and following an inconclusive scrum the referee blew for half time with nearly all the game so far being played in the Taffs Well half.

Half Time Taffs Well 0 Tyrchs 15.

Taffs Well kicked off the second half but were called back because the ball had not gone 10 metres. The Tyrchs won the scrum on half way and looked really dangerous going forward. The Tyrchs broke the Taffs Well line of defence but were called back for a forward pass. Taffs Well won the scrum and pressured the Tyrchs defence gaining a penalty. Taffs Well found a good touch and set up a long period of pressure continuously winning the contact area battles. The pressure had to tell. Taffs Well were granted a scrum after the Tyrchs took too long releasing the ball from a maul, won it and despite strong defence scored a try near the posts. The conversion was successful.

Taffs Well 7 Tyrchs 15.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and following a forward pass by Taffs Well were awarded a scrum which they duly won. The Tyrchs ran the ball up to the half way line and were awarded a penalty for a high tackle. Gethin found a good touch; the Tyrchs won the lineout and broke up the left hand side only to be tackled into touch. Taffs Well won the following lineout and ran the ball into the middle of the field. The referee signalled he was playing advantage as one of the Taffs Well players had come offside. Despite the strong wind the Tyrchs decided to take a kick at the posts which drifted narrowly outside the left hand post. Taffs Well dropped out from their 22 and regained the ball after the Tyrchs lost sight of it in flight. Taffs Well then set up a series of attacks and only desperate defence (culminating in a yellow card) kept them out. Taffs Well elected to take a scrum following the resulting penalty but due to good pressure from the Tyrchs were penalised. The Tyrchs found a good touch but lost the following line out enabling Taffs Well to regain the initiative and eventually scored a good try which was converted with a very good kick from the touchline. A game of two halves is a well used cliché but that is exactly what was happening. 

Taffs Well 14 Tyrchs 15.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and desperately tried to regain the ball to finish off what was now a very close game. Unfortunately in their haste they knocked the ball on and conceded a penalty at the following scrum. Taffs well found a good touch but knocked on at the resulting lineout. The Tyrchs won the scrum and Nick Jones broke up the blind side supported by Kieron Williams who passed swiftly on to Nathan Williams who kicked over the converging defence and followed up so determinedly that the last defender knocked the ball on. With the Taffs Well supporters with their hearts in their mouths the Tyrchs won the scrum and broke into midfield. The Tyrchs forwards quickly supported the ball carrier and following an exchange of passes Adam Conway scored near the posts The try was converted by Gethin.

Taffs Well 14 Tyrchs 22.

Taffs Well restarted the game with a good long kick. The Tyrchs chose to run the ball out of their 22 but knocked the ball on. Taffs Well won the resulting scrum and were awarded a penalty. As there was only a minute left Taffs Well chose to take a kick at the posts which was successful earning them an important bonus point.

The referee then blew up for full time on what had developed into a well contested game.
