Match Report Pentyrch v Cardiff Quins on 18th February 2023

With the threat of rain receding and a clear day emerging at the Diamond Ground the Quins kicked off and Tyrchs made a good catch and progressed up the field. Under pressure the Quins conceded a penalty. Morgan Hayward found a good touch deep into Quins half; the Tyrchs won the resulting line out and moved the ball up to the Quins line. The ball was quickly moved to the right for Nathan Williams to score in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Quins 0 Tyrchs 5

Quins restarted the game and following the Tyrchs being awarded a penalty, Morgan Hayward found a good touch. The Tyrchs lost the resulting lineout but put up a sterling defence eventually being awarded a scrum. The Tyrchs were full of running but in their haste knocked the ball on. There followed two scrums at which the Tyrchs applied good pressure on the Quins pack only to concede a penalty which was successfully converted.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and following a scrum, a lineout and an exchange of kicks found themselves deep in their own 22. The Quins exerted a great deal of pressure on the Tyrchs winning a penalty in the process. Quins took a quick tap and scored a try. The Conversion was unsuccessful.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and following a good catch the Quins ran the ball only to be unluckily called back for a forward pass. The Tyrchs won the resulting scrum but were then penalised. Quins found a good touch but after some toing and froing in midfield soon found them once again under pressure conceding a penalty. Morgan Hayward found a good touch; Tyrchs won the resulting lineout and drove towards the line. Quins were very lucky not to concede a penalty try having twice brought down moving mauls close to their line. Eventually the referee awarded the Tyrchs a penalty which was converted by Gethin Thomas. Quins suffered an injury at this point and scrums went passive whilst front row cover was sorted out.

Quins restarted the game and the Tyrchs cleared the ball up to half way. At the resulting lineout the Tyrchs were awarded a scrum after the ball had not been thrown in straight. The Tyrchs won the scrum and pushed the Quins back a few metres gaining a penalty. Morgan Hayward found a good touch and after winning it the Tyrchs ran the ball through a number of phases and were held up over the Quins line. The referee had already penalised Quins and after finding another good touch, the Tyrchs drove towards the Quins line with Ben Jones scoring near the posts. The try was converted by Gethin Thomas.

Quins restarted the game and after some hesitation the referee awarded Quins a penalty. Quins found a good touch, won the lineout and drove towards the Tyrchs line. Quins exerted good pressure on the Tyrchs and only determined defence kept them out. Quins were awarded a penalty which they took quickly but conceded a penalty perhaps due to over eagerness. The Tyrchs cleared their lines and the referee blew for half time.

The Tyrchs kicked off the second half and despite a good follow up Quins came away with the ball but knocked it on. The Tyrchs won the scrum and then set up a number of attacks. Quins put up a determined defence but eventually the pressure told and Michael Owen scored a good try which Gethin Thomas converted.

Quins 8 Tyrchs 22.

Quins restarted the game but conceded another penalty. The Tyrchs found a good touch, won the resulting lineout and ran the ball well into the Quins 22. Unfortunately when a further try seemed inevitable the ball was knocked on. The Tyrchs were however awarded a free kick, took it quickly and drove over the Quins line. The referee deemed that the ball had been held up and awarded Quins a drop out from their line. The ball was well fielded and the Tyrchs set up another attack only to knock the ball on in a tackle. Quins scrum was again put under great pressure gaining the Tyrchs a penalty. Morgan Hayward found another good touch; the Tyrchs won the lineout and ran the ball. Nathan Williams broke through but the ball was dislodged in a tackle near the posts. The Tyrchs pressured the Quins scrum and got the ball back and after a number of determined attacks Morgan Hayward scored under the posts. Gethin Thomas converted.

Quinns 8 Tyrchs 29

Quins restarted the game and following a number of penalties and scrums the Tyrchs were awarded another penalty which was taken quickly. The ball was moved to the right and Nathan Williams crossed in the corner. Unfortunately the referee to everyone’s amazement called a forward pass. Quins won the scrum which followed and found a good touch near half way. The Tyrchs won the lineout and again severely pressured the Quins defence. Retaining the ball the Tyrchs moved into the Quins half with Adam Conway showing the defence a clean pair of heels until tackled. The Tyrchs regained the ball, drove towards the Quins line and Adam received his due reward scoring a try. The conversion was narrowly missed.

Quins restarted the game and the Tyrchs ran the ball up to half way. Quins were then awarded a penalty which they took quickly. Looking dangerous Quins were only stopped by a very good tackle by Morgan Hayward. The Tyrchs regained the ball with Ben Williams running through the Quins defence and setting up another good position. The ball was moved quickly with the Tyrchs scoring another try which was converted by Gethin Thomas.

Quins 8 Tyrchs 41

Quins restarted the game which seemed to be over running. The Tyrchs made a good catch and with the Quins defence a little disheartened ran the ball down the right flank. Nathan Williams received the ball just inside the Quins half, ran outside his opposite number, chipped the ball over the full back and won the race to touch the ball down. Gethin Thomas converted it.

The referee then checked her watch and blew for no side.
