Home to Treharris

Treharris were the visitors to Parc y Dwrlyn for the first game of the New Year. Following recent rain the pitch was quite sticky but continued to dry out in the brisk easterly wind. Pentyrch began the game positively and scored an unconverted try within 2 minutes. The ball was passed through the backline, chipped through and Will Paddison won the race to the touchdown. The hosts continued to play in positive fashion and after 15 minutes, following a ruck inside the visiting teams 22 meter line, the ball again went through the hands for Ollie Joyce to score near the posts. Hywel Chatham added the conversion. At this stage Pentyrch were dominant in the scrums and lineouts and had the best of the possession and territory. They were, however, penalised on numerous occasions when just short of the opposition try line for technical infringements. One penalty that did go in favour of the home side was converted by Hywel Chatham, to extend Pentyrch’s lead. With the last move of the first half the visitors broke away to score an unconverted try, leaving the interval score 15-5.

Treharris were more in the game in the second half with their pack and scrums sharing the spoils. Midway through the half they scored a further unconverted try to reduce the gap. Within 10 minutes Pentyrch extended their lead following a great deal of pressure near the Treharris line. From a ruck the ball was again moved down the backline with eventually Hywel Chathan crossing for a try, which he also converted. Despite trying to get the fourth bonus point try Pentyrch had to be content with a good 22-10 win.

The 2nd XV played in a tournament at the Arms Park where they kept up their unbeaten record this season by beating Old Penarthians, Llandaff and Llandaff North. The Youth XV was narrowly beaten at home 12-17 by Llandaff RFC in a league game.

The 1st XV does not play next Saturday, 13 January, as their opponents (Abercwmboi) are involved in the WRU Plate. Neither the 2nd XV or the Youth have a fixture at present.

On 20 January the 1st XV host Gwernyfed RFC whilst thec2nd XV is also home to Cardiff Quins RFC. The Youth XV is due to play in the Blues Cup but the fixture has yet to be confirmed.
