Match Report Pentyrch v St Albans (The Buns) on 2nd May
On another sunny evening the Tyrchs kicked off The Malcolm Thomas Cup semi-final and the ball was well fielded by the Buns and kicked into the Tyrchs 22. The Tyrchs signalled their determination to open up the game and ran the ball back only to knock the ball on in contact. The Buns won the resulting scrum and ran the ball really well only to be thwarted by a good tackle by Nathan Williams. The Tyrchs lost the ball forward at the resulting lineout and following winning the scrum the Buns ran the ball. They were camped near the Tyrchs 22 for a few minutes in which they continued to exert a good deal of pressure on the Tyrchs defence which eventually resulted in them winning a penalty for a high tackle. The penalty kick was converted by the Buns No 10 making the score 3-0 to the Buns.
The Tyrchs kicked off and following a sniping run by Kierion Williams and a series of mauls Dylan Atkins crashed through three tackles to score a try to the left of the posts. The conversion was unsuccessful with the score 5-3 to the Tyrchs.
On the kick off by the Buns Alex Moore fielded the ball and put in a long kick to the Buns 22. The ball was run back unexpectedly and following some hesitation in the Tyrchs defence the Buns ran in a try under the posts. The conversion was successful making the score 5-10 to the Buns.
The Buns fielded the ball at the kick off and kicked the ball to the half way line for Joe Paddison to catch it and put in a very good kick into the corner. The Tyrchs pressured the Buns lineout, won the ball which was duly transferred to Dylan Atkins to score his second try of the match. The conversion was unsuccessful leaving the score at 10-10. At the kick off the Buns pressured the Tyrchs defence to win the ball back only to knock it on. At the resulting scrum the Tyrchs knocked on and following
it the Buns moved the ball into midfield and attempted a drop goal which was unsuccessful. The game was restarted at the Tyrchs 22 and the ball was fielded successfully and kicked to within a few yards of the Tyrchs line. The ball was cleared up to the Tyrchs 22 and following the lineout the ball was kicked into space behind the Tyrchs defence only for it to go behind the dead ball line. At the resulting scrum The Tyrchs won the ball and Rhys Dickens made a good run up the left wing and the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck which followed. The resulting lineout was won and following a storming run by David Ince the Tyrchs were awarded a series of penalties all of which were taken quickly. By this time the Buns defence was at sixes and sevens and Barry Topping Morris evaded a despairing tackle to score near the posts. The conversion was successfully kicked by Alex Moore making the score 17-10 to the Tyrchs.
The Buns kicked off, regained possession only to again knock the ball on. The Tyrchs won the resulting scrum and kicked deep into the Buns 22 who ran the ball back. The Buns facing determined defence put in a kick into space only for Joe Paddison to run the ball back into the Buns 22 who were penalised for illegal body checking. The Tyrchs chose to take a scrum which they won and following a number of rucks Kieron William darted around to the left creating space for Dylan Atkins to score another try. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score 22-10 to the Tyrchs.
Half Time Pentyrch 22-Buns 10
The Buns kicked off the second half and the Tyrchs fielded the ball and put in a good touch kick into the Buns 22. The Buns won the resulting lineout and again showing plenty of spirit ran the ball into midfield and following a series of mauls Charlie Smith crashed over the Tyrchs line near the corner, The conversion was unsuccessful making the score 22-15 to the Tyrchs.
The Tyrchs hit back immediately at the kick off. Following some scrappy play by both sides in the Buns 22 Joe Paddison fielded a relieving kick by the Buns and put in a very good run up the right flank, linked up with the supporting Nathan Williams who made ground into the 5 metre area and passed to Thomas Marley who scored near the corner. The conversion from the touch line was successfully made by Alex Moore leaving the score 29-15 to the Tyrchs.
At the kick off the Tyrchs conceded a penalty which was kicked to touch. The Buns won the lineout ran the ball but unfortunately knocked the ball on. The Tyrchs won the scrum and ran the ball back into the Buns half but with Nathan Williams in support Joe Paddison could not get his pass away and the ball ran out of play. The Tyrchs won the resulting lineout only to knock the ball on and after the scrum conceded a penalty which was taken quickly. Good defence by the Tyrchs ensured the ball was won back and Alex Moore put in another good touch finder up into the Buns 22. The Tyrchs continued to pressurise the Buns and following a period of scrappy play were awarded a penalty. The touch finder was very ambitious and as a result the ball went out over the dead ball line. The Buns won the scrum that followed and showing Great Spirit ran the ball all the way up the field almost to the Pentyrch line. Only a good tackle by Barry Topping Morris saved the day. The Buns were awarded a scrum but lost the ball forward due to the ball coming back very slowly. The Tyrchs were now looking to run the ball all the time and following the scrum Dylan Atkins ran strongly through the Buns mid field and following a relieving kick from Alex Moore into the Bunn 22 pressured the Buns to knock the ball on at the following lineout. The throw in at the lineout was deemed to be not straight and following the scrum the Tyrchs again ran the ball and were awarded a series of penalties for high tackles and off sides. After setting a scrum extensive pressure was put on the Buns and following another penalty the ball was kicked to touch. The lineout was won and after a series of well organised mauls the Tyrchs scored a try to the right of the posts which was converted by Alex Moore. Score 36-15 to the Tyrchs. The Buns duly restarted the game and following a good run by Dave Jones the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty which was kicked to touch. The game then again became scrappy and following a number of scrums and lineouts the Tyrchs were awarded a scrum and not a penalty for a particularly bad challenge near their 22. On winning the scrum Dylan Atkins put in another storming run into the Buns half only to be judged to have passed the ball forward to the supporting player. The Buns ran the ball after the scrum but knocked the ball on. There followed a number of scrums for knock on’s etc. which eventually ended in a penalty being awarded to the Buns for a high tackle. The Buns kicked to touch, won the lineout, ran the ball to near half way line only to knock the ball on. The Tyrchs won the scrum and successfully found touch in the Buns 22. The Buns won the lineout and moved the ball up the field through a series of rolling mauls. After intervention from the touch judge the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty and the referee blew for full time.
