Match Report: Pentyrch v Pontyclun on 3rd December 2022

By Harry Rees

On a clear but bitterly cold afternoon Clun kicked off to the club end and the Tyrchs made a good catch and progressed up the field. Under pressure Clun conceded a penalty. Morgan Hayward found a good touch deep into Clun’s half. The Tyrchs lost the lineout and Clun cleared the ball into the Tyrchs 22. Nathan Williams caught the ball on the run and kicked it behind Clun’s covering defence. Unfortunately for Clun the covering player knocked the ball on near the posts and from the resulting scrum Dean Maisey scored under the posts. Morgan Hayward converted the try.

Tyrchs 7 Clun 0.

Clun restarted the game and again the Tyrchs made a good exit from their 22 finding touch near the Clun 10 metre line. Clun won the resulting lineout and gained a penalty. There followed a short period of lineouts and scrums with both teams periodically obtaining some advantage. At a lineout near the Tyrchs 22 the Tyrchs broke out of their half and pressured Clun into conceding a penalty which was converted by Morgan Hayward.

Tyrchs 10 Clun 0.

Clun restarted the game and managed to retrieve the ball. Clun doubled their efforts and Tyrchs had to withstand a great deal of pressure on their defence and conceding a number of penalties. Outstanding defence by the Tyrchs eventually caused Clun to concede a penalty from which Morgan Hayward found a very good touch deep into the Clun half. The Tyrchs won the lineout and ran the ball up to the Clun 22 and won a penalty. Morgan Hayward again successfully converted.

Tyrchs 13 Clun 0.

Clun again restarted the game and unfortunately it was the turn of a Tyrchs player to knock the ball on. Despite strong pressure from the Tyrchs, Clun won the scrum and ran the ball determinedly. After some good phases Clun lost the ball in contact and the Tyrchs cleared up field from the resulting scrum. Clun won the lineout but were strongly pressured by the Tyrchs defence and again lost the ball in contact. The Tyrchs won the scrum but were penalised by the referee. Clun took the penalty quickly and progressed up the field. Unfortunately, due perhaps to over eagerness to make up the deficit, Clun knocked the ball on. The Tyrchs won the scrum and after three good phases seemed destined to increase their lead but determined defence won Clun a penalty allowing them to clear their lines. Nathan Williams however managed to keep the clearing kick in field and kicked the ball into the Clun 22. Clun won the lineout but knocked the ball on. The Tyrchs won the scrum pushing the Clun pack some 4/5 metres gaining a penalty. Captain Scanners spurned a chance to take a kick at the posts and Morgan Hayward put in a very good touch finder into the corner. The Tyrchs lost the lineout knocking the ball on in the process. However at the resulting scrum the Tyrchs pushed Clun off the ball and after 5 phases of well controlled pressure Aodha Hession scored a very good try in the right hand corner. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 18 Clun 0.

Clun restarted the game and after making a good catch the Tyrchs made a good exit by kicking the ball into touch near the half way line. Clun won the following lineout and were awarded a penalty. Clun took it quickly but unfortunately knocked the ball on. The referee who was having a good game blew for half time.

Half Time.  Tyrchs 18 Clun 0.

The Tyrchs kicked off the second half, regained the ball but were forced into touch on the Clun 22. Clun lost the lineout and were forced back into their 22. Over eagerness again perhaps but the Tyrchs conceded a penalty. Clun cleared up to half way and set up a series of good attacks on the Tyrchs defence obtaining a number of penalties. This trend continued with more penalties being awarded. The Tyrchs defence was creaking and following another determined attack the referee yellow carded a Tyrchs player for a high tackle near the posts. Clun took it quickly but strong defence by the Tyrchs kept them out and after good counter rucking won a penalty. The Tyrchs, to their supporters’ relief cleared the ball up field. The kick missed touch however and Clun again came back strongly and the Tyrchs suffered another yellow card after some desperate defence. Clun, sensing an opportunity ran the ball strongly and scored a good try. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 18 Clun 5.

The Tyrchs restarted the game and following a knock on the Tyrchs attacked into the Clun 22. Nathan Williams kicked over the Clun defence but the Tyrchs were awarded a penalty when he was late tackled when following up. Morgan Hayward found a good touch some 5/6 metres out from the Clun line, the Tyrchs won the lineout and after exercising good forward movement Captain Scanners drove over the line. The conversion was narrowly missed.

Tyrchs 23 Clun 5

Clun restarted the game but after regaining the ball unfortunately knocked the ball on. Further pressure on the Clun scrum brought another penalty which in addition to being restored to 15 players allowed the Tyrchs to continue the hold they had on the game. However Clun did not give up. In fact increased their efforts gaining a number of penalties. The Tyrchs had to work hard to avoid any further Clun scores and eventually wore them down causing Clun to be penalised for what appeared to be hands in a ruck. Substitute Tommy Booth found a very good touch about 5 metres from the Clun line. The Tyrchs won the resulting lineout and the forwards drove over the Clun line with Rhys Thomas being credited with the try with the Tyrchs achieving a well-earned bonus point. The conversion was unsuccessful.

Tyrchs 28 Clun 5

Clun restarted and were awarded a scrum after the Tyrchs knocked the ball on. The Tyrchs forwards pressured the Clun scrum, drove them back and won a penalty which they took quickly. Clun defended well causing the Tyrchs to concede another penalty. Clun to their credit took it quickly and ran the ball really well into the Tyrchs half only to knock the ball on. The referee had already allowed a good few minutes ofinjury time so blew the final whistle on what had been a hard fought game played in the right spirit.
